I must confess that I wasn't the most academically gifted, nor particularly diligent pupil at school; my interests largely involved throwing myself around the goal area during football, and running around the athletics track as though my life depended on it. It was only when I needed GCEs (as they were then) to get into nursing training that I started to apply myself. While I was working as a trained nurse, I also attended evening classes at my local college to sit A-Level Philosophy, and GCSE English Literature. In 1993, I retrained as a social-worker, and in 2006, I left to study for a history degree as a mature student. My tutoring career began in 2011, and ever since, I have tutored in tandem with my summer job as a tour guide. My own experiences of education, from a semi-engaged schoolboy to a keen mature student, have enabled me to form a good understanding of how to motivate students whose self-confidence and academic skills require a boost.
