I am a tutor based in Bristol with 3 years experience specializing in teaching Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I have a PhD in Optoelectronics as well as a masters degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton. Working in a world leading research group in a highly competitive field has given me a great deal of insight into not just the topics I teach but also how they are applied in the real world. I have strong communication skills with a wide variety of audiences: I have presented my doctoral research at multiple international conferences, taught undergraduate students and conducted outreach events in primary schools. I have also been very involved with theatre both on-stage and off, including taking a 5-star show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe - the largest performance art festival in the world. I hope these examples demonstrate some of the passion I have for my work which I absolutely take into my teaching and tutoring.
I have tutored over 70 students in Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Electrical Engineering at GCSE, A-Level and university level. I typically work with my students in the months leading up to their final exams and most of my students have attained grades one or two levels above their predicted or mock results after working with me; this includes achieving the highest grades (8/9 or A/A*) but also raising failing students to a passing grade. I have also worked with several students over multiple years, supporting them as they learn the topics and making sure they have a strong foundation and ultimately the best chance of excelling in their exams. Prior to working as a private tutor, I have 4 years of experience teaching undergraduate students in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Electronics and Computer Science as well as more general concepts such as problem solving, note-keeping and communication skills.
I will always begin by discussing a student's individual requirements and any areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. In my experience, however, a robust understanding of the concepts of science and engineering topics combined with problem solving skills will equip a student to answer any exam question and instill the confidence to overcome stressful exam conditions and provide the groundwork to progress further in any area they wish. My attitude is that if a student doesn't understand a concept then I need to explain it in a different way. I am patient and will always emphasize providing a student with the tools to find the answers for themselves rather than have them memorize meaningless information.
