At 7:59am, the university offer is still conditional.

One minute later, the UCAS Hub may display a completely different message.

For one student, it says their place has been confirmed.

For another, it shows an insurance university instead.

Someone else sees that a decision is pending, while their friend has already started calling universities through Clearing.

The temptation is to react immediately—to celebrate, panic, decline something or accept the first alternative offered.

But a UCAS status is not simply good news or bad news. It is an instruction about what happens next.

Understanding that instruction before Results Day can prevent rushed choices with long-term consequences.

How Results Reach UCAS and Universities

For most UK A Levels and many other Level 3 qualifications, students do not need to upload their results manually.

Exam boards send results to UCAS. UCAS matches those results to applications and passes them to the universities or colleges holding the student’s offers. The providers then decide whether the applicant has met the conditions and return that decision to UCAS.

However, UCAS does not receive every qualification.

Some international qualifications, missing GCSE requirements and other results may need to be sent directly to the university. A mismatch between the personal or qualification details in an application and the exam-board record can also delay the process.

This is why students should check in advance whether UCAS will receive all the results their offers depend upon.

The Hub opens with updated statuses from 8:00am UK time on Thursday 13 August 2026, but it will not display the student’s actual grades.

What Your UCAS Status Means

A confirmed firm place means the university has accepted the applicant onto their first-choice course.

A confirmed insurance place normally means the firm choice did not accept the applicant, but the conditions of the insurance offer were met. Students cannot simply choose between the firm and insurance universities after receiving results; the insurance choice operates as a backup when the firm conditions are not met.

A pending decision means the university has not yet made its final decision. It may be checking missing results, considering a near-miss applicant or waiting for another offer condition to be satisfied.

A changed-course offer means a provider is offering something different from the original choice. The change could involve the course, campus, entry year or starting point. The applicant must examine the revised offer rather than assuming it is identical to the original one.

An “in Clearing” status means the student is not currently holding a university place and can explore available courses.

Clearing is open from 2 July until 19 October 2026, and UCAS says more than 50,000 students find places through the process in a typical year.

Four Results-Day Situations and What to Do Next

1. Your Firm Place Is Confirmed

This is the outcome many students hope to see, but confirmation is not the end of the process.

Try this instead: Read every message from the university. Check whether you must complete enrolment, confirm accommodation, provide identification, submit evidence of qualifications or take action relating to student finance.

Do not assume that the UCAS confirmation completes every administrative requirement. The university may contact you separately with deadlines and instructions.

2. Your Insurance Place Is Confirmed

Being accepted by the insurance university can produce mixed emotions, particularly when the student was emotionally committed to the firm choice.

Try this instead: Pause before making any attempt to enter Clearing. Revisit the course, location, accommodation and costs of the insurance option. It may still be an excellent route.

Students cannot swap their firm and insurance choices after receiving results. To pursue another option, they would normally need to find out whether the desired university can consider them through Clearing and then give up the confirmed place.

3. Your Application Is Still Pending

A pending status can feel worse than a rejection because it provides no immediate answer.

Try this instead: Collect your grades first, read any explanation in the Hub and contact the university’s admissions team. Ask whether it needs evidence, is still assessing the application or expects to decide later that day.

Do not decline the offer merely to make the uncertainty disappear. The university may still confirm the original course or present a suitable changed-course offer.

For 2026, a student holding a conditional firm offer who has received all Level 3 results but remains unconfirmed may, after contacting the firm provider, contact UCAS from 8:00am to request release into Clearing. This action declines the firm and insurance choices and cannot simply be reversed, so it should be used only after understanding the consequences.

4. You Are Using Clearing—or Want to Change Direction

Clearing is not a queue in which the first caller automatically receives the best place. Students still need to investigate course content, entry requirements and whether the university is prepared to make an offer.

Try this instead: Use the official UCAS vacancy search, shortlist realistic options and call universities with your grades, UCAS Personal ID and questions ready.

Students can speak to universities during the morning, but eligible applicants cannot add a Clearing choice to the UCAS application until 1:00pm on 13 August. UCAS advises applicants to add a choice only after the university or college has given permission or made an offer.

Only one Clearing choice can be entered at a time. Once it is added, the university decides whether to confirm the place.

Students who already hold an unconditional firm place but have changed their minds can use “Decline my place” to release themselves into Clearing. UCAS warns applicants to speak with the university or an adviser first because declining the place removes the existing confirmation.

You Don’t Have to Make the Decision Alone

Results Day decisions are often made while students are disappointed, excited or under pressure to act quickly.

That is exactly when a calm second opinion becomes valuable.
