I must confess that I wasn't a particularly diligent pupil at school; my interests largely involved throwing myself around the goal area during football, and running around the athletics track as though my life depended on it. It was only when I needed GCEs (as they were then) to get into nursing training that I started to apply myself. While I was working as a trained nurse, I also attended evening classes at my local college to sit A-Level Philosophy, and GCSE English Literature. In 1993, I retrained as a social-worker, and in 2006, I left to study for a history degree as a mature student. My tutoring career began in 2011, and ever since, I have tutored in tandem with my summer job as a tour guide. My own experiences of education, from a semi-engaged schoolboy to a keen mature student, have enabled me to form a good understanding of how to motivate students whose self-confidence and academic skills require a boost.

I have tutored English Language, English Literature, and History students since 2001. During this time, I have become familiar with the AQA, Edexcel, IGCSE, and Eduquas exam boards. My English specialities include Poetry, the 19th Century Novel, Modern Plays, and Shakespeare. My specialities in History include Weimar & Nazi Germany, Mao's China, The British Experience of Warfare, The Tudors, and Medicine Through the Ages.

No two students are the same, and so my approach is very much tailored towards individual needs. Finding out what those needs are requires patience, and by being friendly and empathetic, I can gain the student's active cooperation. Last, but certainly not least, my firm belief is that learning should be a positive experience, and with this in mind, I endeavor to make tutorials not only interesting for the student, but also fun.
